Almost every CCTV decision eventually comes down to one fork in the road: IP cameras or analog HD? Both record video; the difference is in image quality, intelligence and how easily the system grows with you. Here is a practical comparison.
Image quality and resolution
Analog HD cameras (TVI/AHD/CVI) commonly top out around 2MP–5MP. IP cameras start there and scale to 4K and beyond, with better low-light performance and digital zoom that actually stays readable. If you need to recognise faces or number plates at a distance, IP wins comfortably.
Cabling and installation
- Analog runs on coaxial cable with a separate power line — simple and forgiving over long distances.
- IP runs on a single CAT6 cable carrying both data and power (PoE), which simplifies wiring but needs network switches.
For a small retrofit with existing coax, analog can be the pragmatic choice. For new builds, structured CAT6 cabling future-proofs the property.
Intelligence and analytics
This is where IP pulls ahead. Modern IP cameras run on-board AI analytics — line-crossing, intrusion zones, face capture, people counting and ANPR. These reduce false alarms and turn passive footage into proactive alerts. Most of our customers who upgrade do so for analytics as much as resolution.
Cost and scalability
Analog is cheaper per camera and ideal for tight budgets. IP costs more upfront but scales gracefully — add a camera, add a switch port. For multi-building or multi-site setups, IP's networked architecture is far easier to manage centrally.
Our recommendation
For most new homes and businesses in Chennai in 2026, a 4MP IP system hits the sweet spot of clarity, analytics and value. Stick with analog HD only when budget is the hard constraint or you are extending an existing coax system.
